About

Waste Management, Inc. — commonly known as WM — is a major American environmental services company and the largest waste management provider in North America. Headquartered in the Bank of America Tower in Houston, Texas, U.S., WM serves approximately 21 million residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Founded in 1968 by Wayne Huizenga, Dean Buntrock, and Larry Beck, the company began by acquiring small regional waste haulers and quickly grew through expansion and acquisition to become the dominant integrated waste services provider in the industry. Early on, WM not only collected refuse but also developed infrastructure for responsible disposal, recycling, and materials recovery. By the early 1980s, WM had become the world’s largest waste disposal company and continued to innovate by investing in recycling, resource recovery, and landfill gas-to-energy projects. Today, the company’s operations span a broad array of environmental solutions, including curbside waste collection, commercial refuse hauling, recycling processing, landfill management, and renewable energy initiatives. WM also provides specialty and compliance services for hazardous and regulated wastes, reflecting its broader role in environmental sustainability. Over the years, WM has emphasized technology adoption, safety standards, and service efficiency to meet customer needs and regulatory requirements. In recent years, WM has expanded its sustainability footprint, investing in landfill gas-to-energy facilities, waste-to-renewable energy systems, and recycling infrastructure, aligning long-term growth with environmental stewardship. With a strong commitment to sustainable solutions and community service, WM continues to shape how waste is managed responsibly across North America.
